Bedale Library Steering Committee now has an agreed Constitution, and is to be known as Bedale Community Library Management Committee. This matters, because it explicitly separates us from NYCC. The name change shows who will run Bedale Library. The community. That’s us – and perhaps you?
Three members of the Committee visited Bilton and Woodfield Community Library, near Harrogate, on 16 June and heard how they managed the transition to being a community library in 2012, and how successful the library is. This was a very useful morning.
We have a new member, Liz Bostock, who brings her knowledge of marketing to help the Library.
Several people who saw my letter in the Darlington and Stockton Times on Friday 20 June came to the meeting on 6 July, when we discussed a ‘business plan’ in detail. The next meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 27 July, when the main item on the Agenda will be the completion and agreement of that plan so that it can submitted to the relevant NYCC committee in August.
That approval will give us the green light. Our aim is to take over a working library on 31 March 2017, and to keep it open.
There are many things still to be decided. Right now, we would welcome on to the committee people with knowledge of finance, fund-raising, recruiting and managing volunteers. Do you know anyone willing to be Secretary or Treasure? Please ask your friends.
Later, we will need volunteers to work in the library. Training will be provided.
Letter to the D&S published in June
In Bedale, a few of us have formed a Community Library Committee to ensure that the town’s library will stay open after April 2017. We are working with NYCC’s ‘Stronger Communities’ , and have the support of Bedale Town Council, Bedale Hall and Bedale and Villages Community Forum. However, we would value input from people with experience of volunteer recruitment and fundraising, or of library work. Expertise and knowledge of social media, and of marketing and promotion, would also be very useful. We hold a formal meeting, open to everyone, once a month – the next is at 2pm on Wednesday 6 July, in Bedale Hall. We plan a meeting in the autumn to recruit volunteers for library ‘front-of-house’.
Bedale Library needs you – if you can help, please contact us through firstname.lastname@example.org.
A small group is working to keep Bedale’s library open, and to take on the transfer to ‘community’ status after April 2017 (on Friday 13 June a couple of us are going to an Open Morning at Bilton and Woodfield Community Library, north of Harrogate, which has already become a community library).
We want Bedale to continue to have a library, but we’d like to recruit additional members – especially those who have had experience of volunteer recruitment and fundraising, or of library work. Expertise and knowledge of social media, and of marketing and promotion, would also be very useful.
